EXCERPTS FROM “TIPS ON PRACTICING AND PERFORMING”

DR. ANA MARIA TRENCHI BOTTAZZI

Booklet to be released to the public in August 2008

Since this is the first time for hot tips we are including two of them.

In the forthcoming weeks it will be one a week.

1.  When learning a new musical composition the first thing we must consider is to learn the harmonic structure of the work by playing the chords, both written and broken,  as solid chords.  Play each harmonic chord only once and hold it for the exact number of beats in each measure.

Once we have mastered the harmonies by practicing the solid chords, we can then proceed with the interpretation of the work.

2.  A musical composition is very much like a story that we hear or book that we read.  It has chapters, a story line to follow, the drama of each chapter and finally the dramatic culmination of the entire work.

Each chapter in a musical composition has a dramatic high point .  After we determine the location of this high point and where we can relax in each chapter, we then must find the culminating high point of the entire work.

The music, like a mountain with its peaks, has the tallest one to which we ascend and from there we start descending peacefully to the conclusion of the piece.

We will try to do one a week as they arrive.
